| Abstract title: |
The soul of the bridge (from the novel "Drolapi". HESTIA Bookstore Publications, 2023)
|
| Abstract text: |
Arsinoe was searching for a solution, a deus ex machina. She had stretched out her hands, looking for something to grab onto, to slow the descent. To her right, her palm clutched at something—she couldn’t recognize what it was, but she felt a sharp pain from the plant’s thorns. She screamed in pain, as if nails were being driven into her. The scream was her answer, her decision to defeat the beast. She had allied herself with the raging weather and the river that was preparing to receive her sacrificial offering.; The downward plunge lost its strength; she dragged along for a few more meters, until a bramble bush blocked the way to the water.
She felt relief, although that word would better describe her emotional state when she returned to the hotel and recounted her ordeal. All the excursionists expressed admiration that she had dared defy the weather. You’re a heroine, you’ll become a member of the mountaineering club, we need brave people like you.
She remained silent. Maybe you should register the thistle as a member, she thought. Kostas was a few meters away; he had seen the fall. At first, he thought it was a landslide, but when he heard the scream, he immediately ran to help her. He helped her up. You owe thanks to the thistle, he said simply. You carry madness by ton. I had thought myself without equal.
They climbed up a slope, from where they had a clear view of the bridge. They leaned their backs against the wide trunk of a tree. The bridge, Kostas murmured, is dying. I warned them, but they heard nothing. The roots have locked the eastern footing in a headlock. No one cared.
He hugged her tightly, and Arsinoe rested on his chest, against the raincoat. Any moment now, the bridge’s soul will depart. it’s dying, can’t you hear it? She couldn’t see his face, only the veins in his neck bulging. The bridge was struggling to resist. The water clung to its central arch, the only trace still visible. At that moment, it seemed like a drowning person, desperately trying to plant its feet in the riverbed, to keep its head above water, to breathe one more time.
Dawn broke. The darkness receded. The waters lapped at the central arch, almost playfully. Kostas’ fears had not been in vain. The sounds of cracking followed one after another, as though something deep within were giving way. The water battered the bridge with fury, exerting immense pressure upon it. The bridge had entered a Greco-Roman wrestling match, fighting to breathe. It couldn’t have known, of course, the reaper always wins in the end, either because it’s written into the biological circuitry of human creations or because arrogance blinds them to what everything already declares: humans are the weakest link.
The water spouts taunted, sticking out their tongues, it was their moment to respond to the age-old conflict between nature and man, who fancied himself victorious. Nature watches and waits, knowing the folly of human pride; it bides its time, searching for weaknesses to launch its assault.
Arsinoe moves toward the edge of the elevated riverbank. The bridge’s central arch seemed to teeter like a seesaw with the raging waters. The crashes continue. Until the bridge gives in. The central arch collapses. The sound of the collapse is louder than the roar of the water. The bridge kneels; furious nature amputates it. Kostas is silent; he collapses to the ground. Arsinoe, alarmed, follows. His forehead touches the muddy earth. He scratches at it with his nails, presses his muddy hands against his cheeks. Only a dry sound comes from his mouth, like a death rattle. All I have left, he whispers, are the drawings I made for her.
